The Research Institute of Structural Engineering, based on College of Civil and Transportation Engineering, Shenzhen University, established in 1984, is an amalgamation institution providing education, research and professional services. The institute fully cooperates with the discipline construction, experimental teaching and daily management, and maintains the standardized operation of teaching and research equipment of the college. Furthermore, as an important technology application and promotion platform for civil engineering, the institute accelerates the transformation of scientific and technological achievements into engineering applications, as well as laying a solid foundation for the development and technical services.

The Research Institute of Structural Engineering is a member of the Guangdong Association of Quality Inspection and Shenzhen Quality Inspection Association (SQIA), belonging to the six designed inspection agencies and the housing safety appraisal agency authorized by the Housing and Construction Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. It has been granted the qualifications from Guangdong Province Metrology Certification (CMA), National Accreditation Board Laboratory Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CANS), Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS) and so on, which covers various detection and identification capabilities and improves the credibility of scientific research data obtained in civil engineering areas.

The Research Institute of Structural Engineering has three platforms including technical research, engineering services and administrative management. The research areas cover the safety assessment of existing structures, intelligent monitoring of engineering projects, evaluation of building energy consumption, dynamic response of structural earthquake resistance and typhoons, and new technology and new materials for structural reinforcement, etc., which establish a solid foundation for advancement in the field of engineering technology services. Currently, the institute has more than 30 scientific staffs with related qualification certificates, which includes 3 professors, 6 senior engineers (or associate professors), and 13 staffs with doctoral or master degree.

So far, staffs in the Research Institute of Structural Engineering has completed over 10 national, provincial/ministerial, or municipal-level research projects, published more than 130 journal papers, and won 7 provincial or municipal awards and honorary titles. In addition to its daily engineering service work, the institute has completed more than 20 major civil engineering technical consultations, which contributes to technical conversion from university and research institute to industry in local civil engineering construction, and provides strong supports to enhance the technical strength of the institute in applied research and engineering services.
